There is no shortage of good hotels in London, there are even a few great ones but for the best traditions of hospitality alongside the very latest in style, comfort and convenience there is one obvious choice – The Langham.

The Langham has impeccable credentials, since its official opening in 1865, by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, who remained a frequent visitor, it has entertained royalty from across the world, as well as international statesmen, artists, actors and musicians. The Langham was even immortalised in the writing of Conan Doyle, the creator of the detective Sherlock Homes, who used it as the setting for several Sherlock Holmes stories, including A Scandal in Bohemia published in 1889. In the book, the central character is asked by Sherlock Holmes where he is staying, and responds: “You will find me at The Langham Hotel, under the name of Count Von Kramm.”

The Langham’s Palm Court restaurant is famed as the place where the tradition of afternoon tea was born in London almost 150 years ago, an indulgence that lives on today as Tiffin at The Langham. Like all the Langham’s dining facilities, which include the famous Roux brothers restaurant, Roux at The Landau, the Palm Court offers a mouthwatering selection of uniquely delicious edibles .

The Langham has a style which, managing director Duncan Palmer told The Middle East, “is unique”. Tradition and understated elegance never get in the way of comfort and efficiency however, the guest is always put first. It’s a formula that clearly works since next year The Langham celebrates its 150th anniversary.

“Hospitality starts at the front door of The Langham. We aspire to provide impeccable service with poise and high levels of innovation. We are very guest-centric, tailoring our service to meet the exact needs of each individual guest,” Duncan Palmer explained. It is exactly this type of unique style, service and attention to detail that has made The Langham brand so successful across the world and which, by the end of next year, will add a new dimension to Dubai’s rich blend of hospitality venues.

The Langham Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, a 323-room re- sort will be a double first for the Hong Kong based hotel company. It is the group’s first foray into the Middle East region and the first resort in its global collection.

With a prime waterfront location facing the waters of the Gulf, all rooms and suites will have expansive outdoor terraces and sea-front views. Catering to couples and families, the resort will boast 53 well-appointed one and two bedroom suites, some with individual plunge pools.

Designed to become one of Dubai’s dining hotspots, The Langham will offer guests a variety of restaurants and bars, most with al fresco waterside dining. Heading the culinary options will be The Palm Court, an elegant lounge modelled on its namesake in The Langham in London, as well as a Japanese restaurant, a waterfront seafood outlet, a niche breakfast room, an Arabic /Italian fusion café, an all day restaurant featuring international buffet and à la carte selections, a beach restaurant and a juice bar offering all day light snacks and refreshments. The resort will also have a Club Lounge offering complimentary food and beverage presentations throughout the day and a dedicated concierge service.

The Langham will bring to its new Dubai resort a similar ethos to that practiced in its establishments around the world, including a ‘green’ approach to sustainability within the industry. While many hotels make the ‘green’ claim, for some, this seems to amount to little more than cutting down on the daily washing of sheets and towels. For The Langham Group however, which also includes Langham Place Hotels and Resorts and Eaton Hotels, sustainability is a serious business. The Langham in Melbourne, Australia recycles all its unused guest soap, to make new soaps which are distributed to the needy. The group is signed up to the Earthcheck organisation, consequently many of the company’s hotels in Hong Kong, China, the United States and elsewhere participate in Earth Hour, in which hundreds of millions of people across 153 countries switch off their lights to make a stand against climate change. As part of The Langham group’s commitment to community, members of staff frequently participate in local fund raising events. Eighteen colleagues from Langham Place on New York’s Fifth Avenue recently worked on cleaning up a park in Harlem in conjunction with the charity New York Cares.

Despite its old world charm there is a very modern approach to progress at The Langham Group. In 2016, several new facilities will open in China,where the group already owns a number of hotels. A new complex is planned for Jakarta in 2017 and a programme of extensive development scheduled for cities across the US, including New York, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles as well as one in in Toronto, Canada, where afternoon tea will, of course, be served as required.
