Concerns over the Israeli military

The phenomenon of the military being taken over by a minority of hard-line religious fanatics with an apocalyptic vision and a belief that God gave the Jews Judea and Samaria, the biblical name for the West Bank, has been under way for some time.

But it gained great momentum in recent years in what is seen in some quarters as a deliberate penetration of the army using students of hesder yeshiva, or religious schools where religious Jews combine intensive theological study with a shortened period of military service over five years.

This has raised concerns about who such men will ultimately obey – their commanders or their rabbis?
