After its fifth year in London the world’s leading contemporary African art fair, 1:54, will go on show in Africa with its first edition in Marrakech between 24 and 25 February, 2018 at La Mamounia, a hotel with a great history.
The location is significant as the founder of 1:54, Touria El Glaoui is the daughter of one of Morocco’s leading artists, Hassan El Glaoui.
Winston Churchill, himself a keen painter and a fan of Marrakesh, persuaded the rather reluctant parents of a then young El Glaoui to send him to art school. Hassan El Glaoui went on to have an illustrious artistic career. To complete the circle Winston Churchill’s favourite hotel was the Mamounia.
Get your head round that connection and what’s happening in the world of contemporary African art at the art event in February.
It will no doubt be as colourful and mind-opening as the London 1:54.
